Image is everything.

Great images can really add to the impact of your material whereas poor quality photography looks unprofessional and creates a poor impression of your business. There are different ways to obtain high quality images including:

commissioned professional photography
photographic stock libraries (Getty, Photolibrary, istockphoto etc.)
professional bodies and associations

A professional photographer will advise you on the type of shot you can achieve and you'll be able to see the various lighting effects and angles. Most photographers shoot digitally now and you can view the results immediately on a laptop. This will give you exactly the image you want and it will be yours to use freely in future marketing. A design company will art direct the photographer to achieve the best result and will be familiar with how professional photographers work and what to expect. The image can also be enhanced or retouched to your requirements by the design company giving you a unique and personalised result.

Most photographic stock libraries offer royalty free or rights managed images from a huge selection available singly or as collections on cd. The disadvantage here is you may not find exactly the type of shot you require and of course everyone else is also free to purchase and use the same image. If you are a member of a professional association or trade body, they may hold a photo resource for use by their members for a fee. This can be a cost effective way of using high quality photography. Some suppliers may also hold photography of their product for use on request by their agents or distributors.

Remember that images used on websites are normally low resolution and will not generally be suitable for use in your brochures or advertising. Take the advice of a photographer or your designer who will know how to create images that will look sharp and professional.
